We are fortunate to have a fantastic Forest School practitioner, Emma Levan, who leads weekly sessions with our children in Reception. Ms Levan a qualified teacher and has a wealth of experience. The children enthusiastically participate in their afternoons exploring the outside environment. These sessions often link outdoor learning with the five ways of well-being: Be Active, Keep Learning, Take Notice, Give and Connect or our school values of: kindness, ambition, resilience, cooperation and responsibility. Typically, the sessions have a science focus or a link to a wonderful book too.
All children learn about plants through our science curriculum. The older children in Class 4 have the opportunity to look after the raised beds in the grass area for the school so they can understand the life cycle practically too. They sow bulbs for a great springtime show of flowers. Later in the year they plant vegetables – potatoes, tomatoes, beans, courgettes, pumpkins etc.. The children weed and water – each year there are a couple of children who find a real passion for gardening. The children enter their best produce into the local village show. In 2025 they were thrilled to win second prize for their tomatoes and a ‘highly commended’ for their ginormous marrows! The children sell their food crop to parents too – the money is used to buy new plants next year.
